Mid July edition of the Haiti Gazette

Wow!!!

It’s so good to know that voices are heard and God uses whatever means available to get things done This past week there has been a lot of the news coverage through ABC and Anderson Cooper regarding why so many relief supplies have not reached the Haitian people. Many containers that were shipped here months ago have been sitting in customs at the airport or sea port held by the government for a myriad of reasons, none making much sense to anyone. World Hope in Haiti was informed on Thursday night that one of the containers earmarked for WH was being released and needed to be unloaded immediately. Thony, the country director and numerous employees went to the airport and didn’t finish unloading the container until around 1 AM. What a blessing yesterday to see all those relief supplies being packaged up to be delivered to people! If you could see the conditions many live in right now, you’d understand why a bar of soap, washcloth, can of Spam and various toiletries mean so much..

As in most poor countries the key is clean water. Thankfully, the container held a large amount of bottled water that will bless many people. We saw a man the other day, standing in a very dirty stream of water, trying to capture and strain water through a couple pieces of cotton. Just when you think your heart can’t break anymore, there it goes… but then he looks up at you and smiles. Lord let me always remain teachable…

What a surprise, the Nazarene compound is a few blocks from World Hope and we were able to meet up with a couple that used to pastor a church in Tennessee that Davids’ father and his wife attended. We had dinner and visited with them, what a small world! They have been coming to Haiti for over twenty years and love the people here, got some tips from them about learning creole, there is hope for us!

Keep hearing of the major heat wave hitting in the states right now… Hang in there we feel your pain! Good news, David and I are both losing weight, I think we are “melting” a little. It is amazing how quickly your body adjusts, it’s still uncomfortable but it’s just become tolerable. I don’t travel anywhere without a hand fan and a washcloth to mop away the sweat. Quite the fashion statement! Wish my mom could see me now… we seem to be are moving into that stage (remember it from Zambia) where we are really missing our kids and families, please pray that God continues to provide peace and comfort to us.

We keep hearing and seeing one continual scenario playing over and over here - graciousness! Each person that comes is blessed by the people here who never hesitate to thank you for coming and helping their country, from the WHH staff to people encountered on the street or in the tent cities. The resilience of the people is inspiring, they display their belief that God will provide, and He does…

Please continue to pray as there are hundreds of containers waiting for release to many relief organizations here in Haiti. It’s so exciting, in the last few weeks we have seen so much cleanup and rebuilding. These signs are so encouraging to the Haitian people, knowing that things are moving ahead. Imagine how they feel…

Blessings,
David and Beth
